About us
The German Aerospace Center DLR (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V.) is the national aeronautics and space research centre of the Federal Republic of Germany. Its extensive research and development work in aeronautics, space, energy, transport and security is integrated into national and international cooperative ventures. In addition to its own research, as Germany’s space agency, DLR has been given responsibility by the federal government for the planning and implementation of the German space programme. DLR is also the umbrella organisation for the nation’s largest project management agency. In the SAFELAND project, scientists from the Institute of Flight Guidance of the DLR are participating. The Institute of Flight Guidance, located in Braunschweig, is working on the development and application of future processes and technologies for the integrated airborne and ground-based guidance of aircraft. These are decisive steps to keep air traffic safe in the future, while also making it more efficient and robust. The Institute is also involved in numerous projects within SESAR and has been involved in projects addressing research and development in several national and international contexts.
Key assets for the project
The Institute of Flight Guidance provides a large simulation and test infrastructure to support developments with comprehensive experimentation and final evaluation. A core element of SAFELAND will be the research ground control station U-Fly, which is used in several projects, to enable coordinated mission planning and operation of different airborne services.
Furthermore, the institute leads the REACTOR project within Clean Sky 2 which deals with workload reduction for pilots through various technologies (e.g. ground assistance). This expertise will be required in SAFEFLAND.
DLR will contribute with its research potential in aviation and ATM based on:
- extensive research knowledge in different SPO and RPAS solutions;
- the availability of its simulation platform covering the air side and including a remote cockpit simulation facility;
- personnel with operational experience in the different SPO roles;
- the experience from SPO simulations and incapacitation done in previous projects;
DLR is leading WP1 “Definition of Concept”, where the SAFELAND concept of operations and related procedures will be developed, starting from the analysis of the current flight tasks.
